Last August, Google released two Titan security keys: a USB-A stick and a Bluetooth key fob (both with NFC). Those two keys should serve their purpose for the majority of people, but more devices are shipping with USB-C in place of USB-A every day. Google has unveiled a new Titan security key with a USB-C connector and it goes on sale tomorrow (10/15).
The USB-C Titan security key does the same things as the USB-A model. It’s built to the FIDO Universal 2nd Factor (U2F) standard and is compatible with Android, Chrome OS, Windows, and macOS. The firmware is permanently sealed into a secure element hardware chip, which makes it very difficult for a physical attack. Unlike the previous two Titan keys, this one does not have NFC.
Google worked with Yubico on this key, who is a company that has done a lot of work in this area. Google will be selling the USB-C Titan security key starting tomorrow for $40 from the Google Store. Right now, the other two Titan keys are available as a bundle for $50, but Google will soon offer them individually. The USB-A key will go for $25 while the Bluetooth key will go for $35. If you’re looking for an extra layer of security, these physical security keys are a great method.
